All good things must come to an end
Although it might not seem like it if you read this opinionated, bigoted, torrent of shite on a regular basis there are times when I do not want to right. Today that was never truer.
I am afraid that Wycombe’s 21 match unbeaten run came to an end today. And how so? In the way I have been worried about on this blog for some time, and in a number of blog entries. By throwing away a game they dominated and, most notably, giving away 2 late goals in the process. The two ‘crimes’ the Chairboys have been guilty of on more occasions than they should have been this season. Aaaaagh! Disturbing to say the least
Leading 1-0 until the 87th minute they ended up losing to a 93rd minute winner from the last kick of a game! They had to lose sooner or later but the real worry is that it appears to have been self inflicted.
It has happened now and the most important thing is how the team reacts. Now Gormanscum’s true worth as a manager can really be measured. Watch this space, as I am so fond of saying.
The BBC actually did a feature on ‘unbeaten Wycombe’ today and how wonderful the chemistry and team spirit is. What a fucking bok eh!
Grimsby, the team currently in second place, did not play today as their game in ‘Camel Country’ against ‘Darlo’ was called off because of bad weather. Therefore Wycombe still have a 4-point lead at the top, albeit having played a game more than Grimsby. I am still glad I have had a saver on the Mariners though.
Elsewhere Brentford moved into second with another away win, 4-1 at a continually struggling Tranmere, to extend their unbeaten streak to 9. Huddersfield however missed the opportunity to make up ground, well more than a point anyway, on leaders Swansea, by only managing a home draw with Southend. The leaders lost today.
I did stumble across a piece on Soccer Saturday on Sky, still the best footie show on TV bar none, this afternoon about the legend that is David ‘Rocky’ Rocastle. It was a prelude to Highbury tomorrow where the charity formed in David’s honour is having a high profile drive. It was a beautifully put together piece and, I have to admit, rather sad at times too. Wrighty in particular ‘lost it’ when talking about his former teammate. He and Rocky grew up on the same housing estate and knew each other all of their lives. I hope they show it again, as I would love to tape it to be honest…and yes I did shed a small tear for a true Gooner. It is a well known fact that Rocky himself openly wept the day he left THOF, something that was reiterated in the piece. A lovely little montage of a wonderful player and an even more wonderful man.
Personally, I have two abiding memories of Rocky. One was in the, then, Crest Hotel at Wembley during the 1993 FA Cup Final (1st game) when he watched the game on the TV in the hotel bar. I was also forced to do the same after the tickets that had been sold to us, as part of a corporate package, had turned out to be forgeries…there’s a story for another time. Anyway, being in his company, as it were, the passion he was showing throughout the game was so evident. I think he was at Leeds at this time, although he may have been at Chelsea, but for that day he was no different to any fan and he was clearly ‘kicking every ball’ from the bar. It was so evident that, no matter who was paying his wages, he was always a Gooner and wherever he may be now, always will be. Oh and incidentally a more warm modest and accomodating man you could never wish to meet. Answering every question put to him replying to every comment, (no matter how stupid...and that was just from me) signing everything put in front of him, and all done with the sort of humility that had people thinking that they were doing Rocky a favour by asking him. A bit like many of today's player only nothing like them!
My second most prevalent memory of him was a strange one actually. It was on a very dark day for the Arse. It was at York in the FA Cup…yeah THAT one. A freezing cold day and a bunch of fucking prima donnas who cared more about not getting injured on the frozen pitch (Charlie Nicholas), not being injured for England duty (Sansom, Woodcock. Mariner, Rix) and just not being cold, the rest of the very sorry bunch! However, in racing parlance Rocky was the only ‘trier’ on the pitch that day for God's Team…and how! He gave every drop of everything he possessed on a dark afternoon for his team and, if ever I felt genuinely sorry for a player it was Rocky on that day. I shudder to think what his feelings must have been in the dressing room to a number of his teammates who so clearly disgraced the name of the club that afternoon. I do remember a bunch of Arsenal fans, quite rightly in my opinion, booing our players as they left the pitch after a shameful display. However the moment Rocky came past them they burst into spontaneous applause and clamoured to slap his back and pat him. The ground was that small yes. However as soon as Rocky had disappeared down the tunnel then they no sooner reverted to their jeering and catcalls at the other Arsenal players. That is what Rocky was, a fan who was talented enough to play for HIS team. You could also say he was ‘lucky’ enough too. I say this because you always got the impression that was what he believed himself.
I have a framed picture of Rocky in the flat and he will always remain an Arsenal legend and, I am not ashamed to admit, a personal hero…oh and I didn’t even mention a certain night at Shite Hart Lane in 1987 either. I wonder if the Sperz fans ever got the cup final tickets the stadium announcer was talking about at half time…hmmm?
Oh well that’s it for me today. Not sure if I am looking forward to the game tomorrow or not. Even if we win we have no chance of winning the Prem. Very strange, and not something we have been used to in recent years either. Let’s hope that Cygan is still injured. If he is then we will still have a pretty good chance in the game. If he is fit, surely a contradiction in terms, I will be the first one on the early bus home I suspect.
Hope to see you all at Equal Chance tomorrow. If I can finally get the name right the least you can do is come up and play 8-)
See ya
